Coolant Level Sensor Replacement

If you aren’t super mechanically minded, you probably don’t check your coolant that often. Lucky for you, your coolant level sensor does that for you. If it fails, you won’t be reminded to top off your coolant. If you forget to do that, you can overheat your engine and that can lead to a bunch of issues down the track.

What is a coolant level sensor?

Your coolant level sensor detects when the level of coolant drops below the sensor. It then sends a signal to the coolant light on your dashboard. This then tells you to fill your coolant up. A simple piece of kit that does an important job.

Why do you need a coolant level sensor?

If you forget to top off your coolant and the sensor doesn’t remind you, you can overheat the car. This can lead to a whole bunch of stuff that you don’t want happening.

How to tell if you need a new coolant level sensor

If your coolant light comes on and you top it off only to find that it’s still on, that’s a sure sign. If the coolant drops below it’s required level and the light doesn’t come on, then it needs replacing. Otherwise, if your engine overheats and you find no coolant at all, don’t start the car again and get a mechanic as soon as possible.

What’s involved in getting a coolant level sensor replaced?

If the coolant is above the sensor, it will be drained below the sensor level and the sensor unscrewed from the reservoir. The sensor will be disconnected from any wiring or connectors and a new rubber ‘O’ ring will be installed as well as the new sensor. The wiring will be reconnected, and the coolant will be filled to the recommended level. The vehicle will be tested and returned to the customer.
