Unless it’s electric, then it needs… whatever that is, magic? I don’t know.

In order to get your engine to run you need to get fuel from the gas tank, through the fuel line, at a certain fuel pressure so that your fuel injection system can operate. All modern vehicles have fuel injection. Mainly for fuel efficiency, they can electronically control the amount of fuel and run your internal combustion engine.

How does a Fuel Pump work?

There are electronic fuel pumps and mechanical fuel pumps. Both achieve the same thing. They get fuel to your engine.

I hear you saying “I know genius, how do they do that?” well it’s relatively simple in the end. Whether it’s mechanical or electric, the diaphragm sucks fuel in from one end and then pressurises it as it sends it through the fuel line. It is set up to provide the pressure that the fuel system requires.

What can go wrong?

There are plenty of symptoms of a bad fuel pump, if you spot these, you may have a failing fuel pump.

If the car is stumbling when idling, and surging when driving, it may be lacking the fuel it needs.

If it won’t start but has plenty of fuel and battery charge.

If there is an audible loud whining noise from the fuel tank or engine. That can be the diaphragm starting to fail.

If you suffer from any of these, you might have a failing fuel pump on your hands.

Don’t worry, we can help

If you have any fuel pump issues, you can easily get them fixed with My Auto Shop.
