Okay, hands up, who\u2019s been here before?  You\u2019re peacefully driving along, minding your own business, and then \u2013 \u201cCrrrrchhh!\u201d \u2013 it\u2019s suddenly all gone pear-shaped.  You, my friend, have just been in a car accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No worries though, right?  You\u2019re smart, you got car insurance cover, and it\u2019s time to inform your insurer that yes, you will indeed be making a claim, after years of perfect driving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or, so you thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not the smart bit!  We know there\u2019s no problems there (above-average intelligence is a common trait with My Auto Shop<\/a> customers) \u2013 but the car insurance.  It\u2019s gone.  For some reason, your insurance has been invalidated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, car insurance policies are notorious for the high level of fine print, often leaving you high and dry after a round of hefty repairs.  If you have the misfortune of being at fault in an accident, there\u2019s always that heavy thought of needing to cover theirs as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Needless to say, it pays to make sure your insurance is appropriate and up to date.\u00a0 We all know that insurance companies will often find any reason to not pay, where possible, and this can often be the result of factors written into the policy which will invalidate a claim.

With that in mind, here are the top things to stay aware of so you can stay on the right side of any potential car insurance claims you need to deal with in future.\u00a0 Unfortunately, while we can help repair your car, we can\u2019t help repair your insurance claim history!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re going to be \u201ctalking to the hand\u201d pretty quickly if your car isn\u2019t in good working order.\u00a0 This includes stuff like both brake lights working, tyres having adequate tread on them, and so forth.\u00a0 It just needs to be roadworthy, they\u2019re not going to be worried about the quality of the paintjob (that\u2019s your problem, buddy!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Get your driving paperwork in order<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Details are important.\u00a0 Is your New Zealand driver\u2019s licence current?\u00a0 Those insurance premiums – have you checked they\u2019ve been paid?\u00a0 Sometimes direct debits and automatic payments can slip through the cracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modifying your car?\u00a0 Always let your insurance company know.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Car modifications can often be a sensitive subject when it comes to insurance, given the high premiums or inability to successfully acquire insurance for the vehicle.\u00a0 Either way, it pays to be transparent with your insurance company.\u00a0

If you\u2019ve got larger-than-standard sized wheels, a suped-up sound system, a turbo motor, window tints, etc, they need to know about any modifications to your vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be a courteous driver<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oh, of course<\/em> we\u2019re not talking to you!  No no, we\u2019re just talking to the person on the other side of the screen.  With the proliferation of phone cameras and ready access to social media, you don\u2019t want to be caught in the middle of a roadside maelstrom that the insurance company is able to view.  If you\u2019ve had a few drinks, don\u2019t risk it \u2013 grab an Uber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be other ways and means that you\u2019ll miss out on the absolute delight of having someone else pay for your mishap depending on your policy, but you’ll only find out if you sit down and examine your insurance policy.  If you don\u2019t, it might be time to pull out your roadside breakdown toolkit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
