Oil Filter Housing Replacement

Your oil filter is critical to your engine’s maintenance. It needs something to screw into and somewhere to get the oil from. This is where the oil filter housing comes into play. The oil filter housing has the simple existence of holding the oil filter and feed lines. Most cars will never need to worry about the housing, the oil filter is obviously the most serviced item of the assembly. However, if there’s a problem with the oil filter housing, it needs to be fixed.

What is an oil filter housing?

For an oil filter to work correctly, it needs to be fitted to the oil supply and sealed in place. The oil filter housing is what the oil filter screws into and seals it when in place. The gasket on the oil filter compresses against the filter housing to provide an airtight seal. The housing itself is connected directly to the engine block and connected to the oil feed.

Why do you need an oil filter housing?

The oil filter housing is what ensures that not only does the oil filter receive all the dirty oil, it makes sure it stays in the engine. If there’s a crack in the housing or it is failing to seal, it can lead to you losing oil. Your oil filter housing makes sure that your engine stays lubricated and clean.

How to tell if you need a new oil filter housing

If the engine is leaking oil on to the filter and not from it, this may mean the housing is failing. If the oil filter isn’t fitting properly and a crack becomes clearly visible, you’ll need a new filter housing.

What’s involved in getting an oil filter housing replaced?

For a mechanic it’s a lot like changing an oil filter. They will hoist the car, drain the oil and remove the filter. They will then unbolt the filter housing and clean the mounting surface. Once they are satisfied with the result, they will fit the new filter housing and fit a new oil filter. They will then refill the oil and run the engine to create oil pressure. Once they are happy that there are no leaks, they will lower the car and return it to the customer.
