Throttle Position Sensor Replacement

The throttle position sensor is a small device that tells your throttle body how much pressure you’re applying to the accelerator pedal. This means that the right mixture of air/fuel is put into the engine and the car accelerates at the rate you want it too.

What is a throttle position sensor?

It’s a small sensor that is usually mounted close to the intake manifold and directly connected to the throttle body. It is either connected to the throttle cable or wired to the throttle wire. It then sends a signal to the ECU that uses this information to tell how much air/fuel is required.

Why do you need a throttle position sensor?

The throttle position sensor tells your ECU how much air/fuel is required to make your engine work the way your accelerator wants it to. If it plays up then the engine can misfire or sometimes the ECU will put the car into limp mode.

How to tell if you need a new throttle position sensor

If the car surges under acceleration, stumbles when idling or misfires when accelerating, the TPS may need replacing. Other key indicators are if the engine gives you a fault code or if the car can’t hold a set speed.

What’s involved in getting a throttle position sensor replaced?

The mechanic will lift the bonnet and remove any engine coverings. They will then locate the intake manifold and the sensor. They will disconnect the wiring from the TPS and unbolt it from the throttle body. The new throttle position sensor will be fitted and calibrated with all connectors refitted. The engine will be tested and different throttles will be tested making sure everything is working as it should.

How much does a throttle position sensor cost?

They are a slightly expensive piece of equipment. Prices for a replacement range around $400 to $650+

How often do I need a throttle position sensor replaced?

They aren’t known for wearing out, but they can fail if they endure harsh environments.

Is a broken throttle position sensor unsafe?

It can affect the way you drive your car and it can lead to damage to the engine. It’s something that you want to replace when something goes wrong.
