Air Conditioning Service

From hot and humid summers to chilly winters, your car’s AC works hard to keep you comfortable. Over time, refrigerant gas can lose pressure, and leaks can diminish performance. Having your AC serviced every 2 years by a qualified mechanic helps identify and fix issues before they worsen, preventing costly repairs. Include air conditioning servicing in your vehicle maintenance routine to stay comfortable, safe, and avoid expensive breakdowns.

AC Regasing

In New Zealand, if your car’s air conditioning isn’t cooling properly, it may be due to a refrigerant leak. It’s illegal to simply add new refrigerant without fixing the leak first. A qualified mechanic should perform a diagnostic to identify and repair any leaks before recharging the system. This ensures your AC works efficiently, prevents further damage, and complies with NZ regulations. Neglecting a leak can lead to costlier repairs down the line.

Compressor Replacement

A failing AC compressor can cause your car’s air conditioning to blow warm air or stop working altogether. If left unaddressed, it can lead to further damage to other components of the AC system. Replacing or repairing the compressor as soon as an issue is detected can restore proper cooling, prevent more extensive repairs, and ensure your comfort during New Zealand’s varied weather conditions.

Condensor Replacement

A clogged or damaged AC condenser can hinder your car’s ability to cool the cabin effectively. Located between the grille and radiator, the condenser is susceptible to collecting debris or being punctured, leading to reduced airflow and refrigerant leaks. Replacing or repairing a faulty condenser ensures optimal heat exchange, maintains your AC system’s efficiency, and prevents further damage to other components.

Frequently asked questions

How does a regas work?

Its illegal to simply pump in AC refrigerant gas without first identifying and repairing the leak that caused the gas to escape. Thats why we always look to complete a diagnostic before regasing your cars AC system.

Our specialist tools and fully trained mechanics will identify the underlying issue then we will send through a quote for repairs including a regas if required.

Almost all repairs for your AC system can be completed remotely. There are, however, some parts that require the removal of your dash such as your evaporator. In this case, due to the time and complexity of this work, we will arrange for these repairs to be complete at one of our workshops.

The standard AC refrigerant for vehicles in New Zealand is R134a. This is a highly controlled substance due to its global warming potential (GWP). We are extremely careful to ensure the proper procedures are followed when handling this material.

We recommend having your air cabin filter checked annually as part of general vehicle service. My Auto Shop’s mobile mechanics can do this for you.

Having your AC system serviced is recommended every 24 months to reduce the risk of a leak developing or the AC system performance dropping.

We sure do. Give us a call on (09) 887 8317 and we can gather the information needed to produce a repair quote.

  • Diagnostic: ~$99-149;
  • AC regas: ~$350.

Repairs for evaporators, condensers, compressors, etc vary significantly by make / model.

Common AC issues

The most common vehicle air conditioning repairs include fixing refrigerant leaks, replacing failed compressors, cleaning or replacing clogged condensers, and eliminating mould or bacteria growth on evaporators. These issues can cause the AC to blow warm air, stop working altogether, or produce unpleasant odours, and prompt diagnosis and repair by a professional is crucial to prevent further damage to the system.
