CV boots work much the same as boots you wear on your feet; they're designed to keep moisture dirt and grit out of an area where it’s not wanted. The CV joint has a really important job and some important bearing and seals make this happen. The CV boot protects these components to ensure your car works as it should.
A CV boot is made out of a rubber-like composite material and is fitted over the CV joint behind the wheels. This means that as the wheels throw up things like stones, dirt, moisture or other contaminants, they don’t get inside the CV joint and wreck it. It does however keep one thing in and around the CV joint and that's the grease that keeps this key part lubricated.
They’re made out of a softer composite material because they need to withstand; turns, bounces, corners and heat cycles. They do wear down over time because of this, but it’s far easier and cheaper to replace a boot than it is to replace a CV joint.
A CV boot protects your CV joint from harmful contaminants that can hinder its ability to function properly. As your CV joint is critical to you being able to drive your car, it’s something that’s important to maintain.
The easiest way is to check the boot yourself for cracks, splits, or grease leaking out. You can do this by turning the wheels hard in one direction and checking the boot on one side and then doing the same for the other. Another way is if your steering is heavier than usual or you hear the tell tale signs of a CV joint failure; whining, ratcheting when turning or squealing under acceleration. All signs that your CV boots need to be replaced.
The mechanic will loosen the wheels before hoisting the car in the air. Once suspended, they will remove the wheels and loosen the top struts as well as removing the front sway bar if required. They will then remove the old CV boot and assess the joint. Most of the time the joint will need to be replaced also. They will then thoroughly clean the CV joint and surrounding parts before re-greasing and fitting the new CV boot. They will then reconnect all struts, sway bars and wheels and lower the car down. They will then test drive it and give it one more check.
If it’s just the CV boot then usually it’s not too pricey. Expect prices to start around $100 but if the joint needs replacing or more than one boot need replacing, prices can easily climb to over $650+.
It’s a serviced item, but a long life part as well. Usually these won’t fail under 120,000km.
It can lead to damage to your CV joint which can lead to a serious accident. As this is something you’ll want to avoid, we suggest you get your CV boot replaced when it’s needed.
