Bus lanes: a driver’s guide

Image of a road with the word 'bus' painted on it.

With the abundance of road works happening my area at the moment, I’ve noticed a few daring drivers take to the bus lanes to escape what seems to be an ever-increasing traffic problem in Auckland City.

Most urban regions have built bus lanes so buses can travel free of general traffic, even during peak hour traffic, in order to encourage more people to utilise public transportation and enhance efficiency.

Bus lanes are often located to the left of traffic and may be clearly designated as such, or they may be whole different road systems designed just for buses and free of all other traffic.

What are the rules around bus lanes in New Zealand?

Knowing the rules around the use of bus lanes is going to be super helpful in avoiding any nasty fines that come your way as a result of driving on a stretch of road that is designated for buses only, although as you’ll see below, there are some exceptions.

When is it okay to drive in a bus lane?

In New Zealand, you can use a bus lane under the fallowing scenarios:

  • The bus lane is only operational during specified hours, and isn’t active outside of certain hours.
  • You’re driving a vehicle that is permitted to use the bus lane (e.g. motorbikes can ride in standard bus lanes).
  • You’re driving an emergency vehicle, such as a police car, ambulance, or fire truck, and you’re responding to a call with lights and sirens activated.
  • If you’re turning left to enter a driveway or side street, you can drive in the bus lane for up to 50 metres if the road is blocked due to an accident or construction.
  • You are driving a large vehicle and must use the bus lane since your load is too large to fit in one lane.

How far can you drive in a bus lane?

You’re allowed to drive in a bus lane for up to 50 metres before turning to reach a loading bay, driveway or intersection. Always check your blind spot to make sure you haven’t missed someone already using the lane before moving across, and always give way to other drivers who are allowed to use the bus lane as well.

Can cyclists use bus lanes?

Yes, as a cyclist you’re allowed to cycle on the road, in cycle lanes and in bus lanes. However, be extra mindful that you’re not able to cycle in bus-only lanes.
