Expert’s guide for first time car sellers

There’s plenty of information out there for first time car buyers.  But, what about those on the other side?  They say it takes a certain type, and generally car dealers get quickly but heaped into the shiny white loafers bucket, but in reality, there’s an art to selling a car, so here’s our crack at deciphering how it works.

Get good, clear photos of the car

Trust me, the value that decent photography brings to your end of the deal cannot be overstated. It’s worth taking the time to get good photos.  First impressions last, and you’ll set the tone with potential buyers that you know what you’re doing.  It’s a good idea to get a bit of basic camera lighting, easily available on TradeMe and worth a small investment.  This could mean thousands of dollars on your side.

Target your ad to people who will actually buy the car

Don’t be afraid to add a little personality, but don’t overell what you love about the car.  Prospective buyers are searching for a car to buy based on their particular needs.  Don’t get too specific about what you love about the vehicle, focus on features on how well it’s running as well as overall condition.

Keep your selling price sharp, but realistic

Make sure you take account of what you’ve spent on the car, but don’t go overboard!  Cross reference similar makes, models and years online and see what they’re going for.  Many potential buyers will look at how many km’s the car has on the clock, and price often reflect this first, then the other features.

Think beyond online car sales, be on sale all the time!

Don’t be afraid to put an A4 print out advertising the car’s availability on the back window, you never know where a buyer could be.  Make sure it’s simple and clear, with your phone number – just to avoid an awkward car-horn session on the motorway.  Keep the car clean (a regular car wash will pay off at the time of selling), and drive responsibly, it’s almost like your first day of work again!

Get a pre-purchase inspection
If you’re selling your car in a roadworthy condition, it’s a good idea to get a pre-purchase inspection in order to make sure you can guarantee its condition.  This could save you trouble down the track.  My Auto Shop can help you get started with a quote.

Lastly, just be confident!  You can do this.  It can be a bit daunting with all of the questions and concerns, but just stay calm, don’t oversell, and you’ll be dancing your way down the street after a successful sale.  Likely on your way to the nearest car yard, right?!
