How do I know if my brakes need replacing?

...

Your brakes stop your car. They sound pretty important don’t they? You’re right, they are. They also wear out and if unchecked, poor brakes can lead to an accident.

There’s a reason you need to have them replaced as required. They slow your car down through friction. That creates wear, dust and heat.

There’s a few things to keep an eye and an ear out for to let you know if your brakes might need replacing.

What are the signs that your brakes need replacing?

There are some really easy things that you can pay attention to that will save you money in the long run.

If you can spot an issue earlier, it will pay off. Even though the bill comes sooner, it’s smaller than the one that comes later.

  • Screeching noise when braking. If you are braking to slow down, and it sounds like a really angry metal cat, it’s time for new brake pads. This is usually coming from the wear pad at the bottom of the pad. It creates metal on metal contact and gives you a clear audible indication.
  • Pulling when braking. If you notice that your steering wheel will shudder or pull in a certain direction, it’s time for a brake check. It means the pads or calipers are unevenly worn and when braking, it slows down different wheels at different rates.
  • Won’t stop in a hurry. Increased stopping distance is one of the most common factors you’ll see. It means the brakes have worn too far and no longer provide the same stopping power. If you notice abnormal stopping distances, you need to have your brakes replaced as soon as possible – don’t risk an accident.
  • Interval notification or wear sensor. If you have a scheduled brake service schedule, or you get a warning light on the dash, it’s time for a service.
