What are fog lights and why do you need them?

...

You’ve got brake lights, you’ve got headlights, lights for turning, daytime running lights, and even lights for opening your door. But what about fog lights? What do fog lights do? Why do you need them?

Fog lights, or fog lamps as some call them, help you see through…. You guessed it – fog. When fog impacts your driving conditions, front and rear fog lights illuminate the road.

Fog lights are designed to help you see in fog, heavy rain, and your rear fog light helps other people see you in those conditions. When you’re faced with poor visibility conditions you turn on your fog lights.

Why do you need Fog Lights

When it’s foggy, or there’s heavy rain, your headlights sit higher and the light will reflect off of the fog and your visibility will be poor.

Front fog lights sit lower on the car and shine ‘under’ the fog. This helps light up the road ahead when headlights can’t.

Rear fog lights show other drivers that you aren’t braking, but show them that you’re there. If another motorist suddenly sees brake lights through fog it can cause an accident. So rear fog lights help others see you safely.

How are Fog Lights different from other lights?

Where other lights are bright white and powerful, they are also fitted up high on the nose of the car. The fog lights are almost invariably lower down.

They are also more orange or yellow compared to other lights. This isn’t so that they give a ‘warmer ambiance’. It gives the best visibility and illuminates a wide arc of the road.
