Accelerator Cable Replacement

A lot of cars used to trust a steel cable to transmit inputs to the accelerator to the engine. Modern cars use a drive-by-wire system. Over time the cable will need adjusting as it stretches. In some rare cases, if you’re a real fast and furious driver, it can snap and require replacing.

What is an accelerator cable?

It is often a steel braided cable that runs from the throttle body to a lever connected to the accelerator. The throttle boy usually loads the cable with some tension to push the pedal back to 0% throttle. It runs through the firewall and is wrapped in a form of insulation to protect it from wear and tear.

Why do you need an accelerator cable?

It is the cable that tells your engine when and how much you want to accelerate. It’s a pretty important cable to be honest. If it breaks you won’t be able to drive your car.

How to tell if you need a new accelerator cable

If there is a lot of play between acceleration and the car speeding up, that’s a good sign. If you press the pedal and nothing happens, that’s also a good sign it needs replacing. If you can see the cable is visibly frayed, it may be on its way out.

What’s involved in getting an accelerator cable replaced?

The mechanic will disconnect the cable from the pedal as well as any connectors on the cabin side of the firewall. They will then locate the throttle body mounting and disconnect the throttle cable from the body. They will then feed the old cable out and replace it with a new one. Once connected on both ends they will adjust the cable to remove play and make sure the throttle body is calibrated.

How much does an accelerator cable cost?

It’s not that hard of a job, most of the cost is in labor. Expect prices to start at $165 and go higher than $300.

How often do I need an accelerator cable replaced?

Usually never. The most common issue is that they need adjusting.

Is a broken accelerator cable unsafe?

If it breaks while you’re driving it can cause some serious issue that you won’t want to deal with.
