All the basics to keep your car going.

Servicing your car is important to keep it running smoothly for many years. Usually you should service your car every year, but if you do a lot of driving, you might want to do it more frequently. If you leave it too long, you might hear funny noises, have a loss of power and or overheating. A basic service with a My Auto Shop mechanic includes changing your car's oil and filter, checking relevant fluids, electrical system, suspension, steering & brakes. It doesn’t matter if you drive a ute, van, station wagon or hatchback, every car needs one.

What is a service anyway?

The content of a car service can vary depending on what mechanic you go to. Typically it should include an oil change, oil filter change and then have a bunch of core mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems tested for functionality. Some services are more extensive than others, so be wary of super low price points, as they may not complete everything your car needs, or may add extra cost in later.

What is the difference between a Comprehensive & Basic service?

Why do you need a car service?

Your car has many systems that need maintaining as they wear out over time. A service helps to create longevity, as well as ensure your car doesn’t fail on the side of the road and leave you stuck needing a tow.

What symptoms mean you need your car serviced?

If you leave your car too long without a service, you might start to encounter some problems. This might include:

  • A loss of power
  • Grinding or funny noises from the engine
  • Overheating

What does a mechanic do during a car service?

During a basic service with us, our partner-garages complete all the simple checks and tasks to ensure your vehicle is ready to both endure that daily commute and enjoy wild holiday road trips. Your car can expect to have:

  • All relevant fluids and filters checked and topped up as needed.
  • It's engine, transmission, hoses and belts scanned for leaks, security or damage.
  • Suspension and steering components checked for functionality, wear, corrosion and leaks.
  • It's brakes & wheels checked to make sure you can stick to the road in all conditions.

For all you detail loving folks, you can see a specific breakdown for all our services HERE.

How much does a basic service typically cost?

A thorough service can range from $120 - $300+ depending on what your vehicle is (as parts and oil costs can vary) as well as what content is included by the mechanic. We recommend not cutting corners here as it will lead to safety issues, as well as future, more expensive, issues.

How often do I need my car serviced?

A newer car may only need a service at a longer interval, however for most vehicles a general rule is every 12 months or 10,000km. If you drive your car more, or do rougher driving, you might want to do this more frequently. You will also want to get a comprehensive service occasionally too, to get a more in depth look at the vehicle.
