EGR Valve Replacement

Modern emissions standards have caused a great deal of innovation to occur to adhere to the rigorous standards. By mixing in some exhaust gases with the air going into the engine, it can greatly reduce the nitrogen oxide that exits the engine. Due to exhaust gases being so hot, the EGR valves wear out over time.

What is an EGR valve?

Exhaust gas recirculation valves work by taking gases from the exhaust and routing them back into the intake manifold. By offsetting the clean air with recycled air, the exhaust gas becomes cleaner and less fresh air is polluted.

Why do you need an EGR valve?

To meet emission standards and protect the environment. It’s also worth noting that most cars are set up to run with the EGR valve so if it fails then the car may not run as it should. This can lead to engine damage or limp modes.

How to tell if you need a new EGR valve

You may get a ‘check engine’ light on your dashboard which would be diagnosed as a EGR valve failure. In other cases you may notice a rough idle, stumbling or lowered fuel economy as a sign that the valve has failed.

What’s involved in getting an EGR valve replaced?

The mechanic will hoist the car up in the air and access the exhaust manifold underneath.

They will then unbolt the old EGR valve and lines, and fit the new one. They will then pressure test the new lines and valve before turning the car on.

How much does an EGR valve replacement cost?

EGR valves can be really niggly, some are cheap and easy. Most diesel engines range between $350 to $900. Petrol engines are around $400 to $1200. Some really elaborate valves are well over $1600. It really comes down to your car.

How often do I need an EGR valve replaced?

They shouldn’t fail under 150,000km. Usually diesel engines fail first due to the heavy carbon emissions they produce.

Is a broken EGR valve unsafe?

It is unsafe for the environment and for your engine’s lifespan. If you need to replace the EGR valve then you should do so.
