Fuel Pressure Regulator Replacement

To pump fuel from your gas tank to your engine, your car has a fuel pump. In order to make sure that your fuel pump sends the right pressure fuel to the engine, your car has a fuel pressure regulator. When it plays up, your car can get too much or too little fuel and this can cause issues with your driving.

What is a fuel pressure regulator?

A fuel pressure regulator is mounted against the firewall or inside the gas tank, receiving fuel from the tank and then sending it at a set pressure to the fuel rails. Inside the regulator a feed line sends the required amount of fuel to the engine, while the excess is sent back to the tank. It’s a simple invention that does an important job.

Why do you need a fuel pressure regulator?

Think about it in terms of drinking water, if you’re thirsty you want enough water to drink but not so much that you’re overwhelmed. It’s the same with your engine. Without a regulator, your car would get too much fuel or not enough fuel. This can lead to poor fuel economy and damage to your engine. The car may not start at all.

How to tell if you need a new fuel pressure regulator

If your car starts either running too rich or stumbling and misfiring then there could be a problem with the regulator. If any part of the fuel system is leaking or if you get a warning light on the dashboard then it might pay to get a mechanic to check it out.

How is a fuel pressure regulator replaced?

The mechanic will depressurise the fuel system and locate the fuel regulator. They will then disconnect the fuel lines running to and from the regulator, and separate it from the fuel rails. Then it will be disconnected from the intake manifold and replaced with a new one. The new one will be hooked up to the components and the fuel system will be pressure tested. Once the system is good to go the engine will be run and checked for fault codes and operation.

How much does a fuel pressure regulator cost?

The regulator itself makes up most of the cost of replacement. Expect prices to start at around $275 and can go over $750+ depending on how many and how difficult it is to replace.

How often do I need a fuel pressure regulator replaced?

They are a pretty sturdy unit but they do wear out over time. Usually you won’t have to worry about it before 130,000km but when they start to fail you should get them replaced.

Is a broken fuel pressure regulator unsafe?

It can seriously damage your engine so we recommend getting it replaced as soon as its required.
