MG Car Battery Replacement

Your car’s battery is the main source of power on start up and runs all your electrical components. From starting the engine to starting the radio and everything in between, your battery is a valuable part of your car’s operation.

What is a Battery Replacement?

Your car battery is a large electrical storage device that is found within the engine bay. It is filled with electrolyte and lead plates, and is charged by the alternator. It is connected to the car's electrical system between the two attachment poles on the top of the battery. These are the famous ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ terminals. These allow the charge to be transferred through the vehicle to where it is needed and keep everything safe with a good ground.

Why do you need a Battery Replacement?

It’s always nice to start the car when you turn the key. Unfortunately, the batteries get old and eventually fail. It’s important to have your battery inspected and charging system checked - this will give you peace of mind whenever your vehicle’s turned off.

How to tell if it’s time for a new battery?

If you try to turn your car on in the morning and nothing happens, then it’s probably time for a new battery. Likewise, if you’re starting your car and it’s extremely sluggish then the battery may be on its way out. Most new batteries have a small window that shows different colour depending on the condition of the battery.

How does a Battery get replaced?

The battery is located and the terminals disconnected. Negative first and positive second. The battery can be lifted out and replaced with the new one. Clean the terminals before refitting to ensure a good connection. Re-cover the battery and you’re good to go.

How much does a MG Battery Replacement usually cost?

On average, a battery starts at $150, and can be upwards of $400+ depending on the car make and model. If you need to replace the terminals this may cost more.

How often do I need a Battery Replacement?

Essentially a battery replacement is only required when your battery fails. But to keep your car in good health and yourself safe, it’s always good to replace your battery after three years. After four or five years, most car batteries will be almost completely unreliable. Old car batteries can present a number of safety and reliability issues. You don’t want an exploding battery or battery acid covering your engine. Luckily, it's easy to identify if your car's battery is nearing the end of its lifespan.

Is a dead battery unsafe?

Operating a vehicle with a failed battery or charging system can be unhealthy to the car, and in extreme cases, dangerous to you. It’s best to change a battery to make sure that the car will keep working as it should.
