To run your car, you need fuel. To hold the fuel, you need a tank and to keep the fuel safely in the tank you need a fuel filler cap. If your old fuel cap is broken or needs replacing, then it’s a quick and easy fix.
It is a small but important cap that covers the hose to your tank. It stops fuel vapors from escaping and making your car smell like a gas station. It’s also useful for stopping you from blowing your car up.
Well it keeps fuel in the tank and that’s always nice. It also stops you losing fuel to evaporation and keeps the fumes contained. By stopping fuel exiting the tank, it also reduces the risk of a fire or explosion.
If the old cap is broken or damaged and you start to smell those fumes, then it might be time to replace it. Another key indicator is if you get a warning light from your cars’ EVAP sensor. If the cap won’t screw in all the way then the gasket and/or cap will need to be replaced.
The old fuel cap will be unscrewed and disconnected from the safety wire or leash. The new fuel cap will be screwed in and the safety wire and leash will be connected to the new cap and you’re good to go.
Not a whole lot, around $50 to $250 depending on the cost of the part.
Only if it starts to leak or breaks. They do get used every time you fill up, so it’s not uncommon for them to break.
Believe it or not, it can be. If fumes are escaping that means air is getting into the sealed tank. One bad spark and you could be left without a car. It’s really cheap and easy to replace so don’t dilly dally.
