Letting everyone else know that you’re turning is always a good idea. To do this, car makers install indicators on your car. They’re such a good idea that the New Zealand Government made it a law that you have to have them and if they aren’t working then the Police can fine you. These small orange lights can be the difference between having an accident or not.
Indicator bulbs are located on each of the four corners of your vehicle and illuminate when triggered by the driver to warn other vehicles of your intention to change direction. When replacing the bulbs on an indicator it’s important to replace it with the same type and specification as the previous bulb. It’s also worth checking to ensure the fuse is still intact before replacing the bulb as a fuse is much simpler and cheaper to replace.
As they’re a legal requirement, it’s important to have them. If not, you’ll fail your WoF, get a ticket, or worse of all get into an accident. It’s important that they’re all in working order.
Often other drivers will be the first to let you know your indicator lights are out. Another common symptom is that the turn signal will flash at a faster rate than usual on your dashboard, or in modern cars you may receive a warning informing you that an indicator light is out.
After checking the fuse, the mechanic or auto electrician will access the indicator housing and disconnect the bulb from the wiring. A replacement bulb can be easily installed and the light clipped or screwed back in place. Finally the light is checked to ensure its operating correctly.
To have a professional install an indicator bulb will cost from around $40. Typically the bulb itself is cheap (between $10 - $30), and the installation should take no longer than 15 - 30 minutes. On modern cars, or vehicles where the light system is more sophisticated this cost can be significantly more however.
The failure to indicate makes it very difficult for other drivers on the road to predict what you are going to do. It can result in an accident, often at high speeds. Further to this, it is illegal in NZ to operate a vehicle without working indicator lights, and this is a common failure for WOF tests.
