How to increase a car’s resale value

...

If you’re thinking it’s time to sell your car, or want to preserve the resale value of your car, we have some good tips.

The key thing to remember is to approach it like you’re buying the car. Imagine you are buying a brand new car, what do you want to see, and what would put you off.

If you can nail the aspects of buying a car and invert them to selling your car, you’ll do well.

How do you get your car the highest resale possible?

The most important thing to do, to make your car attractive to prospective buyers, is to take care of it.

  • Keep up with regular servicing, keep the receipts.
  • Avoid dings and scratches. A potential buyer will expect a little wear and tear on a used car. The less, the better.
  • Clean your car. That means outside and in. Headlights to floor mats to alloy wheels. A well groomed car inspires trust and appreciation before they even drive it.

If your car looks like it’s been cared for, has evidence that it’s been cared for, and has actually been cared for. You’ll get more money for it.

What hurts resale value?

Well obviously not doing what we just said. You don’t want a mystery car and a dirty, dinged up one at that.

There are some other things that aren’t ideal for resale.

  • Modifications. If you want to customise your car, that’s up to you. However, you’re making it suit you, not the prospective buyer necessarily. You should think through whether you really want to drill holes in your boot to fit that spoiler.
  • Know the market. A SUV or Ute generally holds more value than a Mercedes Sedan. You make your money when you buy something, not just when you sell it. Buy the right car, for the right price and you’ll be amazed.
