Oil Pressure Sensor Replacement

The oil pressure sensor is one of the most important sensors in your car. If your engine is struggling to get oil then it’s something you want to know about as soon as possible. Your engine needs oil to function properly, if there’s an issue your oil pressure sensor will let you know so you don’t blow up your motor.

What is an oil pressure sensor?

Your oil pressure sensor is bolted into your engine block. As oil pressure increases, it pushes a small diaphragm which sends a signal to the ECU telling it how much pressure is in the system. When the spring can overcome the oil pressure on the diaphragm, this tells the ECU that the oil pressure has fallen below a desired level. It’s a small little sensor that does an extremely important job.

Why do you need an oil pressure sensor?

It tells you when your engine has lost oil pressure. When your engine loses oil pressure, it can lead to it self destructing. A new oil pressure sensor costs around 50x less than a new engine - so if something goes wrong with the sensor mull over the maths on that.

How to tell if you need a new oil pressure sensor

If the oil pressure warning light comes on and your oil level is fine, then it may be a problem with the pump or with the sensor. If there’s an OBDII code that is diagnosed as an oil pressure sensor, it’ll save you a lot of time. If the oil pressure sensor flashes repeatedly and/or the check engine light is on and beeping, the best case scenario is it’s just the oil pressure sensor.

What’s involved in getting an oil pressure sensor replaced?

The mechanic will remove any engine coverings preventing access to the sensor. They will then disconnect the wiring from the sensor and unbolt it with any oil overflow cleaned up. The new sensor has some sealant placed around the hole to prevent leaks and is screwed into place. All connectors are hooked up to the sensor and the system is tested.

How much does an oil pressure sensor cost?

They aren’t too expensive and as long as it's easy to access prices start around $100 and can go above $300 for expensive european vehicles.

How often do I need an oil pressure sensor replaced?

Not often at all. It’s pretty rare in modern cars for them to fail. Given how important they are, if they do fail, get them replaced.

Is a broken oil pressure sensor unsafe?

It can be to your engine. It’s not something to mess around with and if it needs replacing, get it replaced ASAP!
