BMW Rear Brake Pad Replacement

Your rear brake pads are the things that are pressed against the rear brake rotors when you press the brake pedal. The friction between the pad and rotor is what creates the stopping ability. In the rear brake assembly, the handbrake pads are what keeps the car stopped when the handbrake is engaged.

These need to be in top working condition. Not just to keep you safe and prevent accidents, they also need to be in good working order to pass a warranty of fitness.

What is a rear brake pad?

A rear brake pad is made out of a metal composite material. It is designed to be softer than the brake rotor. This stops the cheaper brake pads, wearing out the more expensive brake rotor.

These pads are slotted into the brake caliper, which controls their operation and the speed that you stop.

Why do you need brake pads?

Asides from stopping your car when you brake, they are also required as part of your warrant of fitness. The reason you need these as part of a WoF is because they keep you and everyone else safe on the road. They’re an essential part of your car.

How to know if your BMW needs new brake pads?

If your braking distance is increased and the car doesn’t stop as quickly then they may need replacing. Another key indicator is a high pitched squealing noise when braking or very noticeable wear on the brake rotors. On some fancy cars, there will be a service life indicator that tells you when you need to replace them.

How are brake pads replaced?

The wheels are loosened and the car is hoisted up off the ground. The wheels are then removed and the brake pads are disconnected from the inside of the caliper. The handbrake pads and caliper will also be checked over at the same time. The piston’s inside the caliper are checked over and the new pads are fitted. The wheels are refitted and the car will be test driven to ‘bed in’ the brakes.

How much does a BMW rear brake pad replacement cost?

Typically prices start at around $100 but for the more expensive european or performance models this can climb to over $350 if all pads need replacement.

How often do I need my BMW's rear brake pads replaced?

Typically these are replaced every 70,000km’s or so. It depends on how hard the car is driven and the kind of pad material used.

Are broken brake pads unsafe?

They are indeed, you need your brake pads to stop the car and without them you can get into a heap of trouble. You don’t want to crash or at the least, fail a wof, so get them fixed as soon as it’s required.
