Steering Column Replacement

The steering column contains a lot of the really important parts needed to start and drive your car. The most obvious being your steering wheel, ignition barrel and airbag. Being able to turn your car as well as start it, is pretty key.

What is a steering column?

The steering column is assembled in pieces which allows them to collapse in the event of a crash and keep you safe. It carries the turning inputs down to the steering rack and turns the wheels. It also has the wheel mounted to it as well as the airbag and then the shaft carries on down through the firewall and to the steering rack. Along the way it has the wiring for the indicators, lights, audio controls, ignition switches and airbag.

Why do you need a steering column?

Being not only responsible for steering but also for essential components, it’s something that you want to work properly. It’s essential to driving and safety, and as such it’s important to have in perfect working order.

How to tell if you need a new steering column

If you notice your steering is vague or hard to direct, that can mean the column isn’t working as it should. If the steering inputs are harsh or clunky to turn, that can mean the column needs to be fixed also.

What’s involved in getting a steering column replaced?

The mechanic will first diagnose the problem and identify what needs to be fixed. They will then disconnect the battery and make sure the airbag is not charged before removing it from the wheel. They can then remove the steering wheel and any other shroudings around the steering column to get access to it. They will then disconnect the column, and remove it in pieces to resolve the problem. They will then reverse this process and make sure to test the airbag before returning the car to the customer.

How much does a steering column replacement cost?

Depending on the cost of remedying the specific issue the costs can range from $200 to over $1100. It’s essential that the issue is diagnosed so you get the most accurate quote.

How often do I need a steering column replaced?

Depending on the components it may never need replacement but if it does, then it should be done as soon as possible.

Is a broken steering column unsafe?

It is absolutely essential to driving your car safely. If there is an issue with your steering then it’s something that should be fixed as soon as possible.
