LDV Brake Light Switch Replacement

It’s pretty common for a brake light bulb to blow out every now and again. If all the brake lights stop working, i.e nothing lights up when you press the brake pedal, then it’s most likely a problem with the wiring, relay or switches. If all your brake lights don’t come on then the switch may be faulty.

What is a brake light switch?

When you press the brake pedal, the switch will complete the circuit and send power to the brake lights. It usually has a metal rod or switch mechanism that completes the circuit when even a minimal amount of pressure is applied to the pedal.

Why does your LDV need a brake light switch?

It completes the circuit which then turns the brake lights on. Obviously, you want your brake lights to come on when pressing the pedal. You need your brake light switch to be in perfect working condition in order to protect yourself and other motorists.

How to tell if you need a new brake light switch

If you press the brake pedal and none of the rear brake lights come on or if they all flicker intermittently then you may also have a problem. If your car has start/stop then that system may not be working as well. If you notice that your brake lights stay on permanently then this may also be a sign that the switch is stuck.

How is a brake light switch replaced?

It's a simple job on some cars and it can be a real pain in others. The mechanic will remove any floor mats or carpets that prevent access to the switchboard. The switch will be disconnected from any wiring and removed to be replaced with a new one and the operation will be tested before returning the car to the customer. The difficulty can come if the switchboard is hidden behind a whole bunch of stuff that will have to be disconnected and then reconnected - this can soak up some labor time.

How much does a LDV brake light switch replacement cost?

If it’s an easy to access switchboard, the replacement is a piece of cake and it shouldn’t get above $100. If it’s difficult, then the cost can quickly climb to over $200.

How often do I need a brake light switch replaced?

The bulbs are far more prone to failure, next in line is the fuse and it’s rare that the switch needs to be replaced. Unless something damages the switch directly then you shouldn't have to worry about replacing it.

Is a broken brake light switch unsafe?

Well, how important are your brake lights? Yep, the brake light switch is pretty important. If it needs replacing then you should do it as soon as possible.
