Your strut assembly includes all of the important parts of the suspension. It has the spring and both seats as well as the shock absorber and mounts. Over time many of these components wear out and in rare cases the entire assembly will need to be replaced.
A strut assembly includes the key components to your suspension and dampening. The boots, shock absorber and spring seats take care of the unnecessary vibrations. While the spring and shock absorbers control the bounce and rebound of the car as it goes over bumps and turns.
Well you need your suspension and your strut assembly is your suspension. If any of the components start to fail it can affect your handling, stopping and ride comfort.
Usually you will know when one of the components needs replacing based on noise, ride, handling, visible sagging and stopping distance. The entire assembly will need to be replaced if there was some serious damage or your mechanic tells you so.
The wheel on the side of the strut that needs to be replaced will be removed and the car hoisted into the air. The brake lines and connecting steering components will be disconnected. The bottom mount is then unbolted and the top mount is unbolted as well. The strut assembly will then be removed from the car and the new one fitted in place. All connecting components will be refitted and the brake lines bled. A wheel alignment will be done and the car will be bounce tested and test driven.
The amount of valuable components are what makes this job so expensive. The costs for a full strut assembly replacement vary from $450 to over $1000 depending on make/model.
Usually the bushing and mounting components will wear out before the entire assembly will. Generally the assembly will only need replacing if there’s an accident or serious damage occurs.
It is very unsafe. Anything that affects your cars’ ability to turn and stop is something that should be fixed as soon as possible.
