A torque converter uses a series of fans to transmit input power from the engine to the driveshaft. The torque converter seals make sure that everything can run properly and as it should.
What is a torque converter seal?
The torque converter uses fans to force fluid through the transmission which rotates the stator which in turn rotates the driveshaft. The fluid used is automatic transmission fluid, and it is essential to the whole operation. The torque converter seal is what keeps this fluid where it needs to be.
Why do you need a torque converter seal?
The torque converter seal is what keeps the automatic transmission fluid inside the transmission. If you lost that fluid then you’d be in a world of trouble. If the fluid allows contaminants into the torque converter then that can lead to serious problems.
How to tell if you need a new torque converter seal
If you notice ATF leaking underneath your car then the torque converter seal might need replacing. If the automatic transmission fluid is discolored or dirty then the seal may need to be checked and replaced.
What’s involved in getting a torque converter seal replaced?
The mechanic will hoist the car up and remove any underbody trim to access the transmission. They will then unbolt the transmission and lower it down using a gearbox jack. The torque converter will be removed from the transmission and the seal removed and the mounting surface cleaned. The torque converter will be refitted to the transmission and the assembly will be reconnected. New ATF will be put in and the car test driven to ensure everything works like it should.
How much does a torque converter seal replacement cost near Waikato?
The labor required to replace the seal is where the main cost comes from. Prices generally start around $650 and can easily climb above $1250.
How often do I need a torque converter seal replaced?
Only if it breaks or needs to be replaced. They aren’t known for failing under 200,000km but stranger things have happened.
Is a broken torque converter seal unsafe?
It can damage your transmission and that is very unsafe for your bank account. If the seal needs to be replaced, replace it.
