If you’ve parked by feel one too many times, you might need your mag wheel repaired. Even if it’s not a flash wheel, like a mag, it might still be cheaper to fix rather than replace.
What is wheel repair?
It can be carried out in a variety of ways. Generally the panel beater will remove the wheel and place it on a jig. From there they can repair it in any way they see fit. In most cases it requires a specialist to repair but some of the more minor damage can be repaired easily.
Why do you need wheel repair?
If your wheel is damaged, not only does it look bad, it can present serious structural issues. Asides from your style, wheel damage can lead to serious accidents if it breaks or is damaged further in the course of driving.
How to tell if you need a new wheel repair
If you’ve curbed your wheel a bit too aggressively or hit a pothole a bit too aggressively, your wheel may become a bit disfigured. If you notice any cosmetic damage that’s a sign that you’ll need repair. If the ride is a bit rough and you can feel bumping as you drive coming from a corner of the car then there may be a flat spot in one of your rims.
What’s involved in getting a wheel repair?
The specialist will remove the wheel and put it on a jig or bench to work on it. If it is scarring then they will machine the scarred spot and polish it back to as good as new. If the damage is a bit more severe, the specialist might have to weld or fill in the damaged area. In extreme cases they will heat the wheel over 250 degrees and then beat out the dents and damage.
How much does a mag wheel repair cost?
We can’t really give a guide on prices seeing as the required work is so varied and so labor specific. It’s best left to a specialist to appraise.
Is a broken wheel unsafe?
If you’re driving on a damaged wheel then it can be very serious. If the wheel fails while driving it can lead to an accident. Those are something best avoided so if you have any doubts, don’t hesitate to have someone look at it.
