Front Crankshaft Seal Replacement

Your front crankshaft seal is important. It makes sure you have things like a/c and power steering, but also keep your precious oil inside the engine. The drive belt pulley is run off of the crankshaft’s rotations. To do this, your engine is sealed with a front seal that allows for the pulley to be driven without anything else coming back in.

What is a front crankshaft seal?

Most modern front crankshaft seals are made out of a synthetic compound to withstand high heats and excessive wear. They’re circular and look a little like a donut. The casing that they fit into helps keep them tight up against the block and a spring inside the inner part of the circle keeps them snug around the pulley.

Why do you need a front crankshaft seal?

They make sure that you can have your cake and eat it too! By allowing the crankshaft to run all your valuable accessories, while also protecting your crankshaft and bearings. Things like moisture and dirt aren’t good for the inside of your engine, the crankshaft seals keep them out on both ends.

How to tell if you need a new front crankshaft seal

If there is an obvious oil leak from around your front drive pulley then the seal may have perished. If you notice a puddle around the front of your engine the seal should be checked. If you don’t mind getting dirty, you can always check it for cracks or splits.

What’s involved in getting a front crankshaft seal replaced?

The mechanic will disconnect all the important pulleys and belts that run off the drive belt. They will then drain the oil and check it for copper. The drive pulley will be unbolted and the front crankshaft seal will be removed. The mounting surface will be scraped and cleaned. The new seal will be fitted and all pulleys and belts will be refitted. The oil will be refilled and the engine will be run and checked.

How much does a front crankshaft seal cost?

They depend on the labor required to access them. The replacement bill is generally in the $250 to $600 range.

How often do I need a front crankshaft seal replaced?

Only when deemed necessary. Mechanics often check it when replacing things like belts and pulleys. Unless there’s damage or big mileage, you shouldn’t have to worry about it.

Is a broken front crankshaft seal unsafe?

It can lead to loss of oil or contamination. These can set you down the road of an engine repair bill in the range of thousands. It’s a small seal with a big job.
